CCTV Resolution Explained

CCTV resolution refers to the crispness and clearness of a video image. In the case of digital and high-definition (HD) analogue CCTV systems, resolution is determined by the number of pixels per inch (PPI). Put simply, the larger the image, the more pixels it has. Larger images are generally higher in quality than smaller images. However, it’s important not to focus solely on PPI (as you’ll see below).

Older, non-HD analogue CCTV systems have their resolution rating determined by the number of television lines (TVL). For example, PAL systems are 625 TVL and NTSC systems are 525 TVL.

Design Fundamentals of a CCTV System

When it comes to designing a quality CCTV system, many factors come into play. As leading security consultants in Canberra, Ofir and the team design CCTV systems that consider all the variables – from the physical environment (lighting, temperature, obstructions) to the distance / speed of the security targets. It’s important to note that not all security companies in Canberra perform this level of due diligence.

As a general rule, clients seeking to identify faces and number plates (particularly those in motion) require high-resolution cameras (to produce the larger images required for zooming and close-up analysis). However, high-resolution (HD) cameras are only as effective as the technical infrastructure supporting them; in other words, cabling systems, video recording units and monitors need to be suitable for HD.

Digital versus HD Analogue CCTV Systems

ORIA Systems supplies and installs both digital (IP) and high-definition (HD) analogue CCTV systems in Canberra and Queanbeyan. For new (greenfield) sites, we usually recommend a digital (IP) CCTV system; however, we also install HD-TVI analogue CCTV systems in “legacy” environments.

IP CCTV System with 4K Image Resolution

An IP CCTV system with 4K image resolution represents the latest in digital surveillance technology. IP CCTV systems are frequently installed in new commercial buildings and executive residences in Canberra. ORIA Systems provides an end-to-end solution (E2ES) that includes indoor IP cameras (4MP – 8MP), outdoor IP cameras (4MP – 12MP), a network video recorder (NVR) and sophisticated video management software (VMS).*

* ORIA Systems supplies and installs the renowned Milestone video management software (VMS) products, including XProtect LPR (licence plate recognition) software and Smart Client software (to integrate facial recognition capabilities).

HD Analogue CCTV System

In “legacy” security environments, it’s sometimes more cost-effective to install a HD-TVI analogue CCTV system* rather than an IP CCTV system. ORIA Systems supplies and installs the latest HD-TVI analogue CCTV systems in Canberra and Queanbeyan. Our end-to-end solution (E2ES) includes 5MP dome cameras and a quality digital video recorder (DVR).

* Transport Video Interface (TVI) is the latest technology in high-definition (HD) analogue CCTV systems.
